There's no need to leave the UK for exciting and fulfilling primary school trips - indeed, students will be able to feel confident in the knowledge that home is not so far away, while broadening their understanding of the diversity and wonder that their own country contains. For a destination that is within the UK and yet has its own distinct history, geography and culture, head to Cornwall, and discover a whole new world. There are many reasons that this beautiful region is ideal for that first trip away from home, so if you're an educator looking for inspiration, read on.
Natural Wonders
The Cornish landscape must rank among the most awe-inspiring in the country - lying at the very tip of the island's south-west peninsula, surrounded by ocean and featuring England's longest coastline, it is one of the best places for those on primary school trips to see the effects of erosion by wind and water, as well as having a distinct climate from much of the rest of the UK. On top of its magnificent geology, its diverse land and marine habitats mean that it is home to a variety of ecosystems, all worthy of exploration. The educational potential within all this is vast: your students can investigate landforms, study minerals, observe the tides and their effects - and that's before you get to the region's star attraction, the Eden Project, featuring the biggest greenhouse in the world. Here, students can step into a tropical rainforest, take part in a workshop on global sustainability, and see how many of the UK's native plants they recognise while exploring the extensive gardens. For a sense of just how important the natural world and its treasures are, few places are better learning environments than Cornwall.
Underwater Adventures
After seeing the ocean from the shore and talking about its effects on the land, it might be time to delve a little deeper, and find out what lives beneath the waves. The National Marine Aquarium allows students on primary school trips to do just that - with tanks showcasing several of the world's underwater ecosystems, including those that can be found along the Cornish coast as well as those that you would otherwise have to travel halfway across the world to see. With spectacular sea creatures to meet, environmental issues to discuss, and exciting workshops all about the marine world, this attraction is not to be missed by school groups.
Incredible Museums
For classes that have been looking at transport and travel, Cornwall offers not one but two museums perfect for extending students' learning while on primary school trips. One is the Fleet Air Museum, where visitors can get hands-on and investigate the thrilling world of air travel, from Concorde to fighter jets; or for a more nautical experience, head to the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth for a fun-packed few hours focusing on seafaring history and the mysteries of the sea.
