Canterbury Cathedral
Established in 1070, this magnificent cathedral is among the oldest Christian buildings in the country, making it one of Canterbury's star attractions. Its history reaches back almost a millennium and it continues to play an important role in religious life today, as the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury. With all the events it has seen in its time, it is a fascinating place to investigate the development of British culture and politics, with plenty of cross-curricular potential. Guided tours are offered with a variety of subject focuses, including history, art, maths and RE, and a special 'costume trail' allowing children to dress up and immerse themselves in the cathedral's past. Town of Battle
The mere name of the town of Battle is enough to get children interested, and story of how it got that name is bound to hold their attention. Not far from Canterbury, the town is named for the Battle of Hastings, which took place in 1066 - the most famous year in Britain's history. Those who visit as part of their primary school trips will have the chance to explore that history-making event for themselves with a battlefield audio tour. Additionally, there are the ruins of Battle Abbey, which was founded by William the Conqueror and supposedly marks the spot where King Harold was slain. The Abbey is home to an exciting multimedia exhibition focused on those dramatic events, which, along with activities for young visitors, offers a fantastically fulfilling learning experience.
Chatham Dockyard
For a different flavour of history, head to the Historic Dockyard at Chatham for tales of maritime exploration, nautical warfare, sailors and pirates and plenty more. Once a prime dockyard for the Royal Navy, parts of it are preserved as they were in the 18th century, offering a wonderful window onto the Age of Exploration, along with three famous warships and an illuminating museum. Those visiting on their primary school trips can get involved with one of the memorable workshops on offer, becoming pirates, Victorians or Tudors for a day.
